passive solar heat from water filled pvc tubes

And another question: I am thinking about lining my north wall with 4" black pvc sewer tubes set vertically with the bottoms sealed and filled with water. Only because I have them on hand. Will this give me much benefit from solar heat released at night? And do the tops of the tubes need to be sealed to keep heat in, or is leaving them open okay?

I'd seal both ends. That will hold down on algae growth. The heat will move in and out with both ends sealed. It will help some and can't hurt except it takes up space. It takes a lot of water to equal even a few light bulbs or a small electric heater.

I agree. When I try to design a system like that, I end up having to dig a lake to hold all the water I need.

The best I idea I can come up with at the moment, which I am yet to try, is making the floor of the greenhouse a big slab of water, then using an external solar panel to heat the water.

Also the heat from water or other passive source is mostly dissipated by morning when the greenhouse is usually coldest. 2000 gallons made little difference in my 1700 sq ft greenhouse the one time we had a severe freeze. During that freeze the temperature inside the greenhouse was dropping 2 degrees a minute whenever the heater went off.

Yikes, I think I'll find another use for my stack of sewer pipes. Thanks for the info.
