How to make an arbor for growimg cucumbers

Posted by luvdbirds NJ (My Page) on

Does anyone have pictures and possibly plans on how to make a simple arbor to grow cucumbers? I saw one post on making it with a cattle panel, but I don't think my Homeowner's Association will allow that. So we'd like to get or make one out of wood, PVC, or even rebar! Thanks for the input!!!

I used a piece of green coated fencing on a wooden frame and build a rounded trellis for my cucumbers last year. It worked great since the cucumbers hang down under the vines and the trellis keeping them out of the sun and making them very easy to pick!

One way to find out. Put up the cattle panel and see if the homeowners association complains.

I also use "tomato cages" made out of 5' lengths of concrete reinforcement mesh, which is much like steel welded wire fence with heavy wires every 6" x 6". Bend it into a tube, cut the bottom ring off, and stick the points into the dirt so it's 4 1/2' tall.

Or you could run for chairman of the homeowners association and change the rules. Or maybe you don't belong in that kind of environment.

Wasn't part of the reason for moving to a HOA neighborhood was so you wouldn't have to look at the ugly trellises and arbors people would build in your former neighborhood.

luvdbirds,

If they don't approve trellises, are you sure they want vegetables in your yard.

I would build it out of wood or rebar, both of these materials blend in more. Nothing shiny or bright / white.

Try the link below

Here is a link that might be useful: A - Frame Trellis

Find a used swing set; remove swings. Repaint; drape green welded wire fencing over it. Plant vining flowers with the cucs. How could they possibly object.

Good luck.
