 o
wanting thoughts about an idea.

I was wanting to find a better way than have my seedlings in the and a cheaper way than a green house. I came up with this idea I think it will work but I would like some other opinions before I start and mess up my plants. I was wanting to take some hay from the chicken coop that has manure on it put it and in the yard and wet. Then I was gonna put black plastic on it and poke holes so the heat will come up good. Then I was gonna put bales of hay as the walls with the southern wall being half a bale. and cover with clear plastic. I'm sure this would be enough for my plants like broccoli but I was wondering if anybody thought it would be warm enough for tomatoes and peppers. Its not to awful cold here anyways but we have a few snaps of down in the 10's. Just let me know what you think.

might work...it sounds like an old fashioned hot bed. They used to use manured bedding for the heating and then covered it with some type of solid structure, like a coldframe. This could work if started early enough to heat up from the composting process. You Should probably consider some type of heavy cover for overnight.

I also like the concept. I'm concerned there's not enough volume to keep the heat going. Also plant into soil not the straw mix.

Basically a hot bed. Could you just build a coldframe into the side of your homes foundation? There is some good heat escaping along most foundations if your basement is heated anyway. Zero degrees outside, cold frame temps in the mid forties, soil temp was the same. Have insulating night blanket.

well I planning on planting transplants in pots instead of the straw or dirt. I was putting the black plastic on the hay to get it to decompose faster and have more heat inside.

we are living in an older home we just moved in. It has no insulation and heated by wood heat with a crawl space so i dont think I could get help from the house on that part.
