I've used a strong bleach solution from time to time for this purpose. But I'm not sure if it really helped. I haven't had that many issues of this kind. It just seemed like a good idea.

I use a 10% bleach solution for pots and trays every spring before embarking on seed starting. I imagine that would work on the bench too.
