Live arbor from crabapple?

Hey all--Years ago, I saw the directions in some magazine for training tree branches into the ground to create a living arbor. Of course I didn't copy down the directions.

Now, though, after training my crabapple tree (just one tree) branches to the length I need, what do I do? Will it work if I just shove their ends into the ground? Is this best done in spring after they bloom or can I do it now?

Perhaps check with the fruit and orchards forum. They will probably know all about that.
