Garden Tower Project reviews?

Hi,

Has anyone used the Garden Tower Project tower http://gardentowerproject.com/index.php ? It's not the aeroponic one - it's a tower that has a composting tube in its core. I'm considering it but I've never composted (and I live in a coop building in NYC (i.e. worry about smell and escaping and dying worms all over the place)) and I've heard that towers can be difficult to thoroughly water. On the latter point, I've seen DIY info about installing tubes so that each level gets water, but I was wondering if, for the $250-300 it costs, the Garden Tower Project product already dealt with watering, smell, and worm-exploration... Any feedback would be great.

Although I have not used the garden tower product, I have a few observations.
It seems that you could make your own from a used 30 gal. plastic drum, cut slots in the side, put a few holes in the bottom for drainage, and perhaps insert a perforated pvc tube down the middle. The compost, or any other planting medium inside, could be easily irrigated and fertilized with a simple drip system and whatever fertilizer you choose to use.

I don't have a garden tower but I am considering preordering the garden tower 2 so I dont have an opinion on that. However, regarding your concerns about the vermicompting aspect of the garden tower (which is optional - you don't have to utilize that part) I do have a worm factory 360 in my kitchen and there is absolutely no smell and no problems with escapees.
