A roll of wire mesh is a lot cheaper than the wire shelving shown in that pic. The cheapest bench is a treated lumber frame with wire mesh nailed onto it. Rolls of wire mesh come in all different thickness and grid sizes. The smaller the gaps and thicker the wire, the easier it is to maintain a level surface, but a denser mesh also requires more metal and is more expensive.
