 o
aphids

I am growing some leaf lettuce in a south facing window. While doing my first harvest yesterday, I noticed aphids under the leaves. How can I control them and still use the lettuce? This is of special concern since I am currently building a solar greenhouse. I hope to be able to control them in it when it's completed.

Thanks, Mark

Is there a companion crop that would discourage aphids?

Ladybugs will take care of them in the GH but I don't think you want them in the house though. Rinse the lettuce a couple of times in salt water. That will take care of your current problem. John

You can use the insecticidal soap sprays, like Safer, which kill the aphids but is not harmful to you or your lettuce.

RE: aphids

I fought those fiends this past winter/early spring. What I found to work the best was a combo on Neem Oil and Safer Soap. I used a garden sprayer as I had hundreds of plants but being able to pump up the pressure and spray the undersides of the leaves as well as the top worked fantastically. Took about a week to eradicate them.
