Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer Recommendations Please

Posted by BillsBayou none (My Page) on

I'm looking for an indoor/outdoor thermometer with the following characteristics:

Two remote sensors, one for inside my greenhouse, one for outside.
Monitoring station in my back window about 50 feet from the greenhouse, line of sight is clear of obstructions.
Date logging of min/max temps and humidity of both remotes for up to two weeks. (that's the big requirement)

If the remotes have their own displays of current conditions, that'd be nice, but not critical.

I don't really need rain gauges, wind speed, barometric pressure and such. It's nice stuff, but the min/max humidity logging is a must.

I just want to protect my tropical plants on the few nights we get freezes here in New Orleans.

Depending on how deep you want to get into this -
For a wireless weather station that will interface to a PC/Mac and will send data to sites like Wunderground http://www.davisnet.com/weather/products/index.asp

For simpler systems try Oregon Scientific

I've been very happy with the Davis Vantage Pro wireless.

Stay away from the Taylor mine doesn't even reach 25 feet

I bought a base Chaney Instruments (sold as Accrurite) remote temp/humidity system. Advertised as 300 ft. Don't know about that that but works well at 150 ft. they sell systems like you describe. I had a sensor fail and they not only guided me through the registration process, but had a complete new system in my hands in 4 days. Could not recommend more highly. Restored some confidence in the phrase "customer service".

I've been pretty happy with the seven-year performance of my Oregon scientific 433MHz wireless. I have a remote sensor in my greenhouse, another in the basement, and the base station set up in the master bathroom. The distances are about 40 feet and through an interior and exterior wall, and it keeps the signal consistently. The one that I have just stores the min and max temperatures/humidity for three remote sensors.

For data logging, I might look at the Model # WMR200A. According to its manual, even at 1 minute data intervals it can store 19 days of data, and then download via USB to a computer. At 15-minute data intervals it can store 291 days.

I looked for something similar but settled on an old laptop and a USB dual-zone temperature monitor. The software is free. Follow the link below for the full details.

It's a nice way to monitor what's happening in the greenhouse. I also use this to calculate my heating costs and to adjust the set point of my fans.

It's a bit of overkill but I had an old laptop and the sensor was cheap.

Here is a link that might be useful: Temperature
