moving plants in the winter

Within the next week, I need to move plants, shrubs (including Nandina), and a dogwood tree from one residence in Western Maryland to residences in Central Pennsylvania and Leesburg, VA.

Is it better to pot everything and bring inside, then transplant in the spring, or to transplant directly into the ground, now? The weather in both PA and VA has been fluctuating between 35-50 degrees during the day and 17-40 degrees at night.

I have only transplanted small plants in the spring and summer, so any help/advice/tips will be appreciated.

Thanks!
