Hi, I have this plant, and I have no idea what it is. I might also have a couple other questions, but for now, I just want to know the name of the plant. It grows up to 8 leaves in each bundle, and the leaves are about 5 inches long. It is suppose to be a more bushy type plant, and gets big. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like a Schefflera. It might appreciate getting rained on when it's warm enough outside, looks kind of dusty. Also looks like it may not be getting enough light. This is a common house plant so you may want to solicit input on the house plant forum also.

I'll do some research on Schefflera's. Thank you. :) I took the picture at night time, so it wasn't the best. It's right next to the windows in the house, so I don't think it's a light problem. But I have been meaning to take a damp cloth to it to help it breath. I was also wondering, I was told it's suppose to have all green on it, but it's got a thin bark on it. Is it possible to remove that?

Do you mean the trunk has bark on it? As it ages, that's what it's supposed to do. It's a tree. Glad to hear it just looked dark because it was night.

"I was told it's suppose to have all green on it, but it's got a thin bark on it. Is it possible to remove that?" Who told you it is supposed to be all green? You may not want to take plant advice from them in the future. It cannot be removed and is actually a nice feature of the plant. tj

Sorry it took me so long to re-ply. I got busy and forgot to check on here for any new re-ply's. The person who told me doesn't really know too much about plants, and I think someone else told her. But that is why I asked; I knew nothing about the plant and I've been learning a lot since I've gotten on here. I did not know it was a tree, I thought it was a bush of some sort. That's good to know. =)

You can keep it bushY and small, by trimming it often if you prefer that appearance, or let it go for the ceiling, then trim when necessary, so it fits in your house, even though it is a tree.
|
Actually, it's kind of sloppy and was up to the ceiling right last year.I trimmed it down about half way last year. But I had no idea it was such a hardy plant, and I was too afraid to cut lower. I found out I can chop off a bunch of roots and trim it really well; then all I would need to do is pinch off the tops to encourage it to get bushy again. But I saw that the person I had found and read up on, had put theirs in a gritty mix, and I'm not sure what that is. Of course, I'm going to do all this in steps. I figure, in the later spring, or when it gets warm outside, I will start to chop it up and clean the leaves. After a couple of weeks, I want to take it out of it bad soil and trim up the roots. (apparently I'm suppose to soak them, and let them sit on news paper over night?) Then re-plant them in the same pot, but new soil, or gritty mix. I was going to try this with one of the two that I have in case I do something wrong, then work on the second one. But I am a bit nervous about the whole process.

Hey, sorry for the delayed reply. You can find tons of info around here, especially on container and house plant forums, about soils, including gritty mix. There are also several great discussions about pruning Scheffs in the house plant forum. If you get stuck finding stuff, let me know.
