Removing plastic weed barrier

New here, but curious if anyone has any tips for removing plastic weed barrier. There are wide flower beds around the entire perimeter of my house and detached garage. The previous owners lined the beds with plastic sheets. (I've also found sheets of tin foil, shingles, and a buried pair of nylon socks...just a few odd sundries.) I want to get it all up so that I can start fresh. There seems to be some molding, so I think its better to remove it and rehab the soil. Any suggestions?

Seriously, I don't think there's any way to get rid of trash in the soil other than sifting through it.

Once you've gotten the big stuff out, you might try a coarse sieve or sifter.
