Dead branches in middle of otherwise healthy shrub

Hi. I have some sort of dwarf/bush variety of lilac at the front of my house. It bloomed nicely this year, and I can see plenty of fresh, lighter green new growth this year.

However, there are some decidedly dead branches toward the center of the plant. I don't mean the center as in, this is shielded from the sun and therefore there are no leaves, I mean, in the middle of the bush, there is a random large dead splotch. I wonder if it wasn't damaged somehow. Pic attached.

Should I do anything? Trim away the dead bits? Leave them?
