New garden from scratch in old field

I want to start a vegetable garden next spring. Currently, I have a large clearing in the middle of the forest next to my house that I would like to use for the garden. It is fall of tall grasses/weeds/small trees. How do I go about getting the area ready to be planted for next year? any suggestions?

this is what i had in mind: mow it, cut off top layer of sod, till it and pull any roots that I find and cover with newspaper/cardboard and put some manure or something on top...it will be covered with snow for the next 4-5 months. In the spring i was going to till again and make raised beds and use seedlings that I started in the house.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or techniques..thanks so much!
