Storing dead leaves for spring

My property is surrounded by about a dozen trees, so right now I'm up to my ankles in dead leaves (literally). I have been using them for all kinds of things: building my compost pile, mulching around some plants, and filling in the walkways around my beds where the straw I had on there originally was starting to decompose. I will also use them to cover my beds over the winter. Still this will leave me with lots of leftover leaves, and I don't want them to go to waste. I was wondering what would happen if I put some leaves in a few garbage bags and stored them in my basement over winter. That way I can use them to refill my walkways and even start another compost pile. Would they still be usable come spring or am I wasting my time?
