Homelite trimmer fuel problem-ST175BC

When I first acquired the trimmer, it didn't run at all. I've had this problem before with other trimmers. the previous solution was to replace the fuel lines. That worked. I did the same with this one. There are two fuels lines to the carb - one upper and one lower. I forgot to track that when pulling the lines out. Does the long fuel line with the fuel filter go on top or bottom carb outlet/inlet? Is the length of the fuel lines critical - especially on the shorter one? I tried switching them - it started and immediately quit. Gas/oil mixture ratio?
Thanks for suggestions.. Ideas on operator manual. Contacted Homelite.com - haven't heard anything from them.

I have a 285BC that's probably over 15 years old. This year I had to replace the carb. diaphragms as it would crank and run, but would die when you pull the trigger. I also replaced fuel lines. On mine, the longer one goes to the top of the carb. The other one just goes an inch or so inside the fuel tank. I think it's a return line.
