Truckload Tool Sales

| Once or twice a year these guys show up at the local American Legion hall for a Sunday one-day sale. The 4 page flyer gets mailed chocked full of "deals" on name brand tools.
I know that there is a sucker born every minute and that nothing in life is free, but... has anybody bothered to go to these things? A buddy and I were thinking about taking a look. My question is are the power tools new or re-conditioned? |

| Last year I bought a reconditioned Makita 1/2" drill at one of those sales for $99. A week or so later I saw the same drill NEW in a local hardware store for $99. |

Went to one of those sales one time, with a friend, who had bought a tool previously, at another one of those sales. the tool failed to work properly! the seller recognized my friend, took back the tool, offered a refund, but my friend opted for another one, which worked great every time he used it! Just lucky, i guess! Well, the Chinks have to sell their junk tools somehow, so if ya fall for the "suckers bait" and buy that stuff, ya deserve to get "Hooked"! Can't you just see this country, after we've sold all our steel mills, factories, stores, everything to the other side!? Think they are going to sell us munitions, tanks, other things-oh, yes, they'll sell us lawn mowers, etc., but try standing off an army tank with yer Lawn Boy! |

| When my little kids would earn some money, they liked to go to the local junk store and buy a bunch of the imported trinkets. A day later it was broken and in the garbage can. Over a few year period I'd tell them that a big fat businessman was driving around in his big fat car and it was all paid for by their hard earned money. Now that they're grown up, all of them buy quality items, having learned a lesson as a child. |

| and then there are people that spend $5.00 in gas to save .50 on a gallon of milk. Buy quality, buy locally. Spending a little more now, will always be less expensive in the end. Eric |

| My Dad used to tell me "Go (or buy) first class, or go third class, but don't mess around with second class." He was right. If I need something for a one-time use, I'll sometimes go third class - which is what this stuff (and Harbor Freight & Pep Boys) is. The one time I went to one of these sales, any "name brand" stuff they had was reconditioned - and, for the most part they just happened to be out of stock). |

| Is Cummins the name of the company? If so, most of it is crap, worse than harbor freight IMO. The may say lifetime warranty, but at least with Harbor Freight if you have a local store you'll know where to return broken stuff, with cummins you probably have to send it in or wait for the truck to come around again. The name brand stuff is usually all refurbished and not that much cheaper than new stuff would be if you'd shop around. |

| My father-in-law, a retired civil engineer, has occassionally purchased a few things at these sales. What I remember are a drill press, a planer and a generator. All have been fine for what they are, but he doesn't use them that heavily. And, having grown up with a "carpenter" father he knows tools pretty well. Also, they live WAY out in the boondocks, so the sale is sort of like a social event for much of the valley. |

| Yes, most of the items at these are junk, however as long as you know what you are getting for your money there are still bargains to be had. I bought a fish tape for pulling wires.... it works fine but then again how bad could it be. I also bought a flourescent work light that ended up being junk and the bulb was not replaceable so it was a waste of money. My father in law bought a Chicago Electric electric impact wrench. It has worked fine... granted, it's not made for heavy duty use but then again he only uses it a few times a year. For $30 or whatever he spent I think it was well worth it. |

| I went to a Cummins truck sale. I bought some small stuff that may wear out fast but I also got a couple of refurbished Ryobi and Rigid (same company) tools that I hope will turn out well. Being refurbished, each was missing a couple of minor parts. I was shocked to get almost immediate phone help and replacement parts were sent quickly with no hassles. Actually they accidently sent me someone elses battery charger (I suppose they got my stuff) but Ryobi immediately resent mine and had me keep the charger. |

| I got a decent looking little milling maching (made by Sieg in China) at the Cummins truck sale for $399+sales tax for a total of $432 loaded in my pickup. Grizzly tools sells the exact same mill but painted green for $525+shipping for a total of $594. If I'm gonna get a Chinese mill, I may as well save $162 doing it. http://www.grizzly.com/products/G8689 http://www.cumminstools.com/browse.cfm/4,1485.htm |

Been to a few of them, yes junk. But there are some things like tarps and things that have no moving parts that are OK. The $1.00 hammer was good to leave in the shed so the kids would grap that one first and not look for my good ones! And it is fun to just walk around tools and see old friends. |

You Guys seem to have the same problem as we have. On the box there is an Australian Flag with the words above and below it. "DESIGNED IN AUSTRALIA" "MADE FOR AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS" Else where you find in small Print "MADE IN PRC" When I see that I give it a big miss, suggest you do to. Its time we got our national pride back plus the jobs and wealth that go with it. Dock. |

Yes, I concur with most all these posts about the quality, etc. etc.,,, The reason I'm posting a follow-up is because our city council finally decided to follow a local ordinance they passed (but let slide) a few years ago to barr cummins (et al) truck tool sales inside city limits. This hurts who? The Fraternal order of Eagles hall that made 3k off a two or three day rental of their hall. THAT money wasn't putting gas in the Fat Man's cadillac-- it was money that went further -- aid to the widows and poor, community potlucks, sponsorship of the high school's music program, etc. etc. The reason the council was coerced in the first place was by the local hardware stores (three out of four are True Value chains) who claimed that the truck sales cut into their business. BS ! ! ! If you want good tools, you go to the local store anyway. I don't buy cheap tools from them anyhow! My solution is: I'm going to contact Cummins and see if they want to rent my hall just outside city limits. My organization, the Patrons of Husbandry, does it's fair share of community good and then some, and we could sure use that 3K towards fixing up our hall. Seeing as how the city won't give us a dime to fix our hall which feeds over 400 people on the first Sunday of each month, we sorely need that kind of boost. Out of the ashes rises a phoenix, I guess. |
