Craftsman Garage Door Opener Gear

I took the cover off my Craftsman 1/2 garage door opener after I could hear the motor running but the door not opening. It is a late 80's model installed new.The nylon gear was chewed up and it looked like it had snow inside the housing.Ordered a gear and put it on and decided to try it out before reinstalling the cover to see if everything was ok.As soon as I hit the remote to watch, the corkscrew looking gear that still looks brand new started to shred the new gear and throwing shavings everywhere.Tried it several times and the same thing happened every time. The weight of the door is not even on the unit as its still unhooked.(I have not put the chain back on the sprocket yet).Any ideas is appreciated.
