Spreader

I have a push type spreader that I have had for years. The biggest problem is the gears on the axel that drive the thrower disc are weak and the amount of material in the hopper can be ony a couple of inches deep, before the gears skip.

Are there any inexpensive spreader, that work as advertised. ie the gearing mechanism can drive the disc with a load in the hooper.

I was looking at a pull type spread, for a good price but let it go because of questions on the gears

FWIW, for years I got along with a "banjo seeder" which is essentially a canvas hopper sitting on a wood frame with an adjustable feed chute, hand crank and rotary spreader that hangs off your shoulder. I think it held about 20-25 lbs. Did a good job, got some exercise, win-win. Finally broke down and just bought a tow behind as old war wounds are starting to get problematic. I've attached a typical link from Amazon, various flavors and prices around. Last one I got at TSC for about $20 and it had metal gears. Clean well and oil after use.

Check into the Brinly-Hardy line of tow behind spreaders. Not the cheapest. But the best I have found.

Fully enclosed gearbox and stainless steel interior hardware, shaft and agitator.
