Would leaking primer bulb cause string trimmer to run poorly?

Hello. I have a string trimmmer that starts but will not stay running. It's a Homelite STG170. I read some other posts here and now suspect I need to rebuild the carb, or at least replace the diaphragm. But my original question was going to be, the primer bulb is cracked and leaking. Would this cause the engine to run poorly or die? There's not a lot of fuel leaking out; I'm wondering more about air getting in or out, or perhaps a lack of fuel pressure, than about fuel leakage causing my problem.

Thanks.
