Need advice on what tool to buy to trim around a swingset

Hi. I need advice on what kind of tool to buy. We just got a wooden swingset in our back yard and I have to trim around it. The trimmer beats up the wood so I've been trimming with a pair of scissors (and it takes forever). Are there any handheld trimmers for delicate projects like this? Any advice? Thanks.

Alternatively you could wrap some sort of protective material about the bottom of the post. The same idea that is done for younger trees. This would be about the same cost or maybe even cheaper than electric shears and in the end save you time.

better yet, put down some plastic all around the set, then cover it with pea gravel or sand. NO trimming at all!

I gave on trimming a few years back. Now I just use (generic) RoundUp for the places I can't get with the mower. I haven't picked up a weedeater in years. Pooh Bear |

lol. When I moved into a previous house with 2/3 acres in a country setting a few years back. My neighbor had these sage words "RoundUp is your friend". I came to be a believer :).

I would dig a 2-3" wide, 1" deep trough around each post and then pour a ring of concrete around the posts and then trowel it smooth with a slight slope to divert water away from the post. Then, your push mower wheels would ride up onto the concrete and you'd never have to trim or spray anything again. Just make sure the top of the concrete is about even with the surrounding dirt. If you want to get the kids involved and make it "artsy", they can push marbles, colored stones or pieces of tile into the concrete before it dries. Total cost= $5 at most

machiem what a fantastic idea! I have about 5-10 items(water pumps, bird house posts, swingset) around my property that would benefit from that treatment. I have some left over red gravel from the front walk that I can press into it to transform the look. Shermers

Cement should be 3.5" thick minimum if you want it to hold up more than 1 season in cold country. If you dont get frost, dont worry about it :o) It is a very good idea for some situations ! I use back plastic flex tubing 6" diameter for most of our trees. Works like a charm and protects them from my over eager Stihl weed mangler........ |

Cement pavers are only about 1" thick, and they seem to make it through the winters. Plus, you're not walking or driving on the concrete. It's only supporting about 15 lbs when a wheel rolls over it. Take some old coat hangers and bend them into circles to go around the posts to help reinforce the concrete if you're concerned. It's a cheap form of re-bar.

How thick to withstand a wheel from 1500 lb tractor? Not that I could get it that close.

3.5 should be enough if your base is solid. Concrete is fantastic at resisting compression, however it does not do as well under shear. I think most concrete driveways are 4".

I hate to be a nag, but you realize that swingsets are supposed to have protective mulch or other material under and around them. Evidently, grass is much harder than bark mulch, rubber, sand or other playground-type groundcover, according to the book I have on building swingsets. Just thought I'd mention it.

Cassidyway, That is exactly what I've done for my kids play structure. I use RoundUp two or three times yearly to kill the things that grow through the mulch. -greenhobby

"The trimmer beats up the wood" No.... its the operator that beats up the wood. :) Just use the 'tip' of the trimmer line to cut, this way you trim the grass, instead of beat up the wood. With a little practice trimming around the wood will take no time. Or you could use roundup. :)
