If you lay the sod out dirt side up and let it dry good, you'll probably be OK. Any moisture will make the dirt stick to everything inside. I don't think the dirt will do the hammers and shredder blade any good, but it's your cow.

Maybe years ago, when stuff was overbuilt, you could do that, but I don't think it's advisable on the newer, lightweight stuff.

The local Amish throw small rocks into the shredder to get rid of the mud.

well i would not run the sod thru the chipper part i found a small one for sale for 100 dollars and am thinking of giving it a try with the shredder screen replaced with bars.
