Any owners of the Troy-bilt Cultivator Plus?

I bought this around 1984 and have never seen another one since then, not on ebay either. Except for where I bought it, I haven't found a dealer who saw one either

It is an amazing machine. I used it to dig trenches, break up piles of hardened topsoil and cultivate. You can't hurt the thing.

Does anybody know the story about why they were taken off the market almost as soon as they were introduced? Could it be the liability from the exposed front tines??

What a steel at 35 bucks. The one I bought had a new carb on it. It runs great. It is a tilling machine. It proves you don't need a lot of horse power. The crankcase oil had been changed and new plug. I was surprised that there was no oil in the chain drive case. Wish I got a good deal yours.

    Hello folks,

I have a Troy-Built Cultivator Plus in my garage that I haven't used for several years. I would be willing to sell it. It is in very good condition and I can send photos to any interested parties if you just send me your E-mail. ( H30-35346P S/N4048B). The cultivator is located in the town of Joliet in Illinois. I don't know what the shipping costs would be and of course if you are nearby you can always come by and pick it up. I am asking $165.00, obo plus any shipping costs I may incur. You can E-mail me at tomzep357@gmail.com

That's a good sign. At least there's oil in there to leak. Try making your own out of thin rubber sheeting or maybe a garden hose gasket.

Follow-up with the valve spring back on:

    1. It runs but not any better. You can hear the leaking valves sputter.
    2. I’ll have to go back and replace the valve cover
gasket. It leaks a lot compared to before.
Will Black RTV do vs buying or making a gasket? Did adding the 8 OZ of oil add to this new
      leak?
    3. I want the “Monster” to go back as it came or
better, since he gave me a trial (vs him knowing).
    4. My two mowers are wondering what’s the deal on the
:30 minute cuts. My Feet and I’ll
      adjust "Some Exercise to Grass".

I have a Troy Bilt Cultivator Plus for sale. It was in a stall in our barn and we pulled it out, put in gas, and it started. We were impressed but do not know anything else about it or what any of the levers do

    qm,

What information are you looking for? There's not many levers to deal with on this little machine.

I have this awesome machine and the manual which 84 year old Grandpa has maintained all of his equipment meticulously, he is an engineer, and would like to sell it. I put gas in and pulled the cord five times and it started. Amazing! Is there a farm forum that I would post this cultivator to??

The largest lever I assume is the choke?

I found the manual in the file cabinet and will start looking at it today.

Does the hand grip on the handle control the tines? I was afraid to press it.

  • olddad27

    hi qm,

Yes that lever does control the tines. Your manual should have detailed instructions about it.

I purchased a troy-bilt cultivator years ago and replaced the 3.5.hp engine with a honda 5 hp., old pressure water sprayer unit, Never knew what it was called. What a great history about this gutsy little tool. Thank you!

I looking for the tine oil seals. Does anybody know where I can get them? Thanks Michael.. Cultivator plus

  • olddad27

    Mike Garcia

Harwal makes a very close equivalent: Harwal Oil Seal: (1.000” Shaft Diameter x 1.250” OD x .250” Thickness) Seal Type: "BDL", Nitrile Material. They can be purchased through any reputable local industrial bearing distributor. Be careful when removing the old original seals. Use penetrating oil (Not WD-40) and let it soak into the seal around the outside diameter. Mine were installed very tight and rusted. Take your time doing it to prevent from scratching the seal ID in the Chain Transmission Bearing housing right behind those seals.

Probably a good time to use some kerosene or mineral spirits to flush out any old SAE 30 Weight Oil and possible dirt out of the chain case. Make sure the interior is reasonably clean and dry. Compressed air helps a lot. Replace with 9 ounces of 85W90 GL-4 Gear Oil. (Available through NAPA or other Auto Parts distributors of your choice. Do not use a GL-5 rated gear oil - there is a bronze sleeve bearing inside the upper input shaft housing. (Bronze does not go well with GL-5 oil grades. It could attack and possibly corrode the bronze bushing.)

Reason for the heavier oil is to prevent or slow down any possible oil leakage past the seals. I'm sure there will be some shaft wear at the seals after 33-34 years of use.

I got this tiller from my daughter in Ohio. It was old & dirty and they were going to throw it away and I took it and took it apart and repainted it. I have been trying to find a service manual with no luck. I am not sure how to hook up the cable from the left side of the handle control lever to the belt pressure bracket to make the tillers turn.

  • gator_rider1

Cable hooks into spring, spring hooks into lever that pulls idler down on belt so tines turn. There thumb screw on handle you adjust so tines stop if hand off lever.

I have a cultivator plus from my father-in-law who bought it from his neighbor who bought it from Garden Way in April 1984. Serial number is C-004277. I have the packing list.

The edger and snow thrower have never been used but I have all the parts. My wife and I used the tiller many times in the garden.

Is anyone interested in buying it? I am located in North Central Massachusetts.

I'm in the process of replacing the axle seals as mentioned above. Do I need to take the case apart to get the seals out?

  • Christopher vonRichtenhoffen

Generally, it's never necessary to remove the axles on a seal replacement.

    any special tools needed?

  • Christopher vonRichtenhoffen
    last year

Sometimes seals are steel with a rubber coating. Sometimes all plastic. Usually you can take a sharpened screwdriver tip and try to pierce through the seal a little bit inward from the edge nearest the aluminum casing, not near the axle, hitting it preceisly with a hammer. They generally come out easily. It's more difficult to put the new seal in and keeping it square while gently hitting the edge with a hammer. Make a note which side of the seal faces outward, before it's removed. And coat the shaft with oil, as well as the seal, so you don't tear the rubber lip of the inner seals edge that would ride on the axle.

It's good to see all of You "Seasoned Techs" are still enjoying your skills. I still give my tools the best of my skills. My firewood is over stocked due to our old Neighborhood has Aged Well. I am limiting myself to Electric Saws and Modified Electric Log Splitter. My Challenge is trying to work as Quiet and Neat X not causing a Complaint from Neighbors on our Small City Lots...

We made 7,000 Cultivater plus units and also sold 400 snowblower attacments. I was in market at the time and helped design it. I also set up the assembly line for it- which was a one man operation. I still have a 2 hp hand made prototype as well. I have an almost complete chaincase in excellent shape available for sale. it is only missing the tine shaft with the chain gear on it. My email is: boppshopcustoms@yahoo.com Terry

Years ago, in the early to mid 80s, I took the factory tour in Troy, NY. At the time I had (and still use) a 6hp Horse. I also bought many of the other items that Garden Way produced, including 2 carts which I've rebuilt a few times and still use constantly.

Our most used tool was the Cultivator Plus. I seriously abused that cultivator digging trenches and carving out our mountain side and it still sits in the barn, and I don't think i ever had to replace a single part, not even the tines. I also had the Snowblower attachment, which I sold new to someone on ebay, after it wasn't being used.

About 10 years ago, we found a second Cultivator Plus at a yard sale for $35. That is still used to cultivate our shrinking garden of about 500 sq. ft., after the Horse digs it up.

the original one sits in the barn because of starting problems and the yard sale item is used all Summer.

Any original Troy Bilt product was built like an iron tank and worth the price.
