Help Trimming " Money Tree "

I've had this Money Tree for about 6 years now, it grows well but I don't think I've been cutting it back properly. I would like to make it a bit more bushy without killing it. Each stalk (trunk?) is long and at the top of each is where the leaves are. I think I can simply cut about 1/2 inch above the bottom most leave, but i'm afraid to kill it.
Any thoughts or tips?
