How to remove rust from garden shears

I left my good garden shears and English bonsai trimmer outside and now there is a little rust on the blades. What product do you recommend? How can I remove the rust without dulling the blade?

If it's just minor surface rust i use steel wool. Then i apply a thin coat of oil.

If not already clear, you should not run the abrasive across or over the edge. Steel wool works great as does wet and dry 600 grit sandpaper. it is usually black or deep blue black with a cloth like backing. Its great stuff for cleaning pots and pans too.
