hand powered shredder - is there such a thing?

I'm looking for a small-ish shredder (hand cranked?) that I can use to chop up my plant stems etc into mulch. At present I use scissors, which is labor-intensive and hard on the hands and scissors.

I saw a medium sized electric one for sale roadside - they wanted $500. Wayyy beyond my budget. ~JoAnn

For something cheap, some options are:

1) Pile up what you have and use a lawn mower
2) Pile up what you have and use a string trimmer. Some do this in a trash can
3) Use a hedge trimmer, be careful with your fingers though.

Hi Joann,

Yeah, they do make 'em - a machete and a stump! :-P

Other than that, I've not heard of a shredder that was hand powered.

OK, I guess using the lawn mower is my best bet.
Machete indeed. O_o

Ah yes, the Professor...the man of my dreams. Now.
Back in the 70s I thought he was an old geek. :P
