How to sharpen motorized hedge trimmer blades

I have a Sthil hedge trimmer attachment that goes on one of their multi-use handles. I also have the chain saw attachment.

I use a special spray on the trimmer blades to keep gum/sap dissolved, but trimmer seems to be to a point where it may need sharpening since I have used it 5 years on some long hemlock hedges. It's not cutting quite so crisp as it used to.

How do I sharpen the hedge trimmer blades? Other internet sites have suggested various methods such as a small dremel 1/4" grinding wheel, a small flat file. Dealer said they use a tool and they charge $45, and siad it is time consuming.

I usually do everything myself. I don't mind buying the right tool to sharpen it or the time it will take. Has anyone sharpened their own hedge motorized trimmer attachment?

Thanks!

I use the Dremel on mine. The grinding stones
for sharpening chain saw blades seems to work
best. It does take a long time. I don't know
the configuration of your blades, but the cutting
edges on mine are curved, so a flat file would not
work.

My cheap hedge trimmer has flat blade edges and I use a flat file. A needle file or round file might work.

It's a little time consuming but you can chuck the blades up in a chain grinder and sharpen `em that way. Within reason you can also use a belt sander on the flat mating surfaces which serves the same end as taking the peened metal from the dull edges. With patience, a flat file should do the same thing.

Has anyone priced new replacement blades vs paying to have yours sharpened by a dealer? Charles Ranheim
