Newer Ariens 724 gearbox failure. What to do?

The auger gearbox on my lightly used 5yr old 724 is empty. The JD dealer I bought it from said they believe they would have to replace $425 of parts to replace thr gearbox. No way to know if the gears are ok if they dont take it apart and no way to know for sure if all $425 parts are necesary until 2hrs of labor are invested. They said I could fill it with heavy gear oil and see how long it lasts. I dont want to see it dry again and unusable mid season when there are no new ones available. What shoukd I do? Leaning towarss puting it on Craigslist and buying a new one. I am really pissed at Ariens for the amount of time this poor design and cheap gearbox was allowed in production. Mad enough to buy another brand. But what brand? Are they the best of the worst? Have they fixed the design flaw that makes it impossible to repair a gearbox due to all the rusted together parts? Thanks.
