I like 4 cycle engines better than 2 cycle. With a 4 cycle engine you do not need to mix the oil and gas, and worry about getting the wrong ratio. Unlike a 2 cycle engine, with 4 cycles you are not putting 2% residuals into the carburetor. (50 to 1 gas oil mixture.) to evaporate and clog the jets and other small passage ways.

Performance wise I do not think there is any difference. The net maintenance is the same. With 4 cycles you check the oil before use, with 2 cycles you mix the oil. With 2 cycles, you will have to spend more time to ensure the carburetor is clean and residuals do not build up.

Other considerations a 4 cycle will weight a few onces more, and will not run upside down, so you have to be careful when you are cleaning the cobwebs from the ceiling of the porch.
