I know flat heads cant drop a valve, but..

One of my Ariens' started mis-firing, amd popping back through the carb. My initial suspicion was a sheared fly wheel key. Closer investigation eliminated that. Tecumseh horizontals use a semi- circular steel key.

To get to this point, the head is 1/2 off. So a little more wrenching had the head off. Then I found the trouble. The intake valve had been hitting the head. The top spring keeper had broken in two and was laying in the valve chamber I was able to remove the spring and the intact keeper. But I cant pull the valve up through the guide. Should I be able to, or is there something else I have to do?

Am I gonna hafta get into the crank case to fix this? I dont really care either way. I have never gotten into a small engine's insides. I plan to harvest what I need to get this one running from a junker with a thrown rod. Getting the parts from the junker will serve as a tutorial of sorts but any tips would be gratefully accepted. TIA.
