Battery isn't charging on a B&S 17 HP

I recently purchased a 2000 MTD lawn tractor with a 17 HP twin cylinder B&S engine. The battery isn't charging when I mow. Every time I use it I have to charge the battery (dated 11/07). I have already checked the voltage while it is running and it's only 12.6 volts. Seems like the alternator. I'm trying to figure out where the alternator is on this engine and how difficult it will be to replace it. That information or any other suggestions would be welcome. I'm a new member and this looks like a great web site.

Thanks so much.

The alternator is under the flywheel! It most likely is a series of magnets on the inside of the flywheel, which revolves and sends the magnets around two small coils under it, which makes the power to charge the battery. Your battery is nearing the end of its good life. 2 years is about what most of them give ya, and its all down-hill from there!~ Its quite possible that a magnet or two has fallen off the flywheel inside/under it. It must be removed to check that. Also, mousies may have eaten the insulation off the wires under the flywheel cover and caused a short circuit. there is a charging diode in one of the wires that come out from under the flywheel tin cover. It will be a sort of swelled section of the insulation. Check that wire, too, for mousie chews!
