I can't position my shift forks correctly

I have a Craftsman 6 speed manual transmission (Model 917.276051)that needed the input shaft replaced. Upon separating the transaxle many of the gears came out of place before I could get a picture of them and now I'm finding it difficult to reassemble. I believe I have everything in place now with the exception of the shift forks. The picture shows my current configuration as it would appear looking through the gear shift mount, but I do not believe this is correct. Does the shift gate belong inside the retainer clips? The diagram in the manual is only helpful for identifying the parts but offers nothing in the way of positioning the parts. Please help!!!
