MTD making Craftsman tractors for 2010 ?

| Hi All:
In looking at the Sears website, it appears that there are some new models in the 2010 tractor lineup that don't look like the old AYP machines and now look more like MTD machines. In particular, these are the lower-priced models in the $1000-$1200 price range.
They are also carrying a Yard Machines model at $899 and a Yard Man model at $1499.
I think this is a major step backwards for those out there who have a limited budget and want a new machine, as it seems that the AYP machines were generally better made and better performers at the lower price points.
Can anyone confirm this and any idea why the change in supplier? |

| Price, price and price. MTD once made decent quality equipment but is now the bargain basement supplier. Obviously AYP, now part of Husqvarna, either couldn't meet the price point which is most likely or production numbers |

| Good observation. From what I've heard from Sears store sales guys they made a major sourcing change this year from AYP/Husqvarna to MTD for their low end tractors, many push walk behinds, and all their tillers both front and rear tine. Something to consider. You can still get Husqvarna products but you have to go up the product line to find them. |

| Thre really is no choice now other than MTD for those who spend at the low end, either by choice or necessity...too bad. |

| The current AYP's were pretty good units, as most were direct copies of the JD L-Series. |

| The AYP/ EHP machines would be a good starter machine. I put the L series in the same category as well, though they are not the same tractor. |

| Take a close look at the newer generation Husqvarna made tractors these days, the ones with the lift lever in the left hand fender is the tip off. They are a very close design concept to the L series Deere units with quite a few feature benefits at generally a much better price. Can get them at Sears too. Seems to be a solid unit, great value. |

| I was in the local Craftsman store looking over the new line up just a couple of days ago. The new 2000 series was made by MTD. If you want a MTD product, you have to be careful in choosing because the left over 2000 series are made by AYP/Electrolux/Husqvarna GP The new 3000 series and up were made by AYP/Electrolux / Husqvarna Gp. The professional series in the store were AYP/Electrolux/Husqvarna. The best way to determine the manufacturer is to look at the model number that is on the decal under the seat. Models beginning with 917 are made by AYP/Electrolux/Husqvarna Gp. In my opinion and experience, the cheapest 917 Sears tractors were more durable and easier to service/maintain than the comparable MTD products. |
