Shaft & Gear Assembly on Simplicity

I have a Simplicity Regent 16hp Hydro. The steering shaft broke and I easily removed it (it was in two pieces) and had it welded back together. Now, I can't get it back in; it will almost go in, but not quite. I don't want to force it and can't see where I can take anything else off to make it go in; it appears the gear on the end of the steering column is welded on or is just one piece. Any ideas? I thought about just cutting into the frame a bit to give me more wiggle room. Thoughts?

You have your hands full there. I would take your exact model # and look for a parts break down to see how it is serviced.
