Older 46' Craftsman Lawn Tractor, blades will only engage once

This is a very wierd problem that I'm hoping someone has seen before.

I started the tractor this spring, ended up replacing a tire and a blade mandrel for it, then went out to cut the lawn.

Cut half, turned it off to move an object, sat back on it and although it started back up, the blades wouldn't engage.

I put it up, went out the next day, and it started up and I cut the rest of the lawn. I turned it off, turned it back on and, once again, the blades won't engage. It looks like it's trying to start turning the pullies, but just won't do it.

Has anyone else seen this intermittent problem before? It's persistant in that it will start once and then not again.

You might provide the Sears 917.xxxxxx number so one knows WHICH tractor you have.
You didn't even mention if it has an electric clutch or manual clutch!
