spend the bucks - get a manual for that machine from a JD dealership - you'll most likely save money in the longer run.

Try weeked freedom machines it will answer alot of your questions. There is company that make a after market 3point that will work on your tractor because the OEM CAT 0 3point is no longer avaliable from John Deere.

Bob, There is a trans filter located under the tractor and the belly pan must be removed to access it. The engine oil drain is a valve sticking out the right engine cover. There is a trans drain under at the bottom of the rear housing. You should use the proper JD oil in the trans. I use Amsoil synthetic hydrostatic/hydraulic oil in mine. Spend the money and get a manual for it. There is a wealth of info in there. Email me direct if you need more help.

I have a 420 as well. It's a 1956 420U. I know that they hydraulic filler tube is under the seat, but what weight oil should I be using for the hydraulics?

That is a late 1950's utility tractor, right? The original manual from Deere calls for 10w non-detergent motor oil. 30w non-detergent is OK for warm weather, but in cold weather can cause line vibration. Just use standard hydraulic oil in the 5-gal. containers that you buy at Wal-Mart.
