John Deere 420 Help

Hi, I just picked up a John Deere 420 and I need some advise.

1. Where is the drain plug for the engine oil?
2. Is there an oil filter for the transmission and if so where is it located?
3. It appears to have a rear PTO, at least there is a small splined shaft coming out of the rear of the trans, directly under the seat. No 3 point hitch. There is also a splined shaft on the front under the grill.
4. One of the 3 leavers for the hydraulics doesn't move back and forth as much as the other two; the one nearest the tractor. Is that normal?
5. What type of oil can be used in the transmission?

Anything else these machines are known for, good or bad?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

spend the bucks - get a manual for that machine from a JD dealership - you'll most likely save money in the longer run.

Try weeked freedom machines it will answer alot of your questions. There is company that make a after market 3point that will work on your tractor because the OEM CAT 0 3point is no longer avaliable from John Deere.

Here is a link that might be useful: WFM

Bob, There is a trans filter located under the tractor and the belly pan must be removed to access it. The engine oil drain is a valve sticking out the right engine cover. There is a trans drain under at the bottom of the rear housing. You should use the proper JD oil in the trans. I use Amsoil synthetic hydrostatic/hydraulic oil in mine. Spend the money and get a manual for it. There is a wealth of info in there. Email me direct if you need more help.

I have a 420 as well. It's a 1956 420U. I know that they hydraulic filler tube is under the seat, but what weight oil should I be using for the hydraulics?

That is a late 1950's utility tractor, right? The original manual from Deere calls for 10w non-detergent motor oil. 30w non-detergent is OK for warm weather, but in cold weather can cause line vibration. Just use standard hydraulic oil in the 5-gal. containers that you buy at Wal-Mart.
