| I have a 2002 GT245 (20hp Kawasaki) that has 275 hours on it and has performed flawlessly since I bought it new. The last time I had used it was about a month ago and it ran fine. Today, when I started it, the engine coughed and emitted a little black smoke. A few minutes later, it started surging at WOT. When I pulled it to idle, it died.
I mowed about 15 minutes with the engine surging the entire time. Finally I replaced the fuel and air filters, and it seemed to run OK for a few minutes, then the surging started again. The throttle is also really touchy.
Any ideas? Could it be the governor? |

Sounds like you have some varnish in your carb. Spray some carb cleaner in it and see if that helps. If not take the carb off and give it a thorough cleaning with carb cleaner. I did this and the surging went away immediately.

No doubt it is going to be a fuel problem. go ahead and servivce your engine if you have not yeet. fuel filter, ari filter, plugs, oil, etc etc. Your carb is going to have a little trash in it thouhg and after you put it back together make sure at WOT that your RPM's are at 3600

I recently purchased a 2005 gt 235 with an amazingly low 25 hrs upon getting it home after 9 hr drive one way i pulled it off the trailer and started her up and the madness began engine was surging at low idle and a little at higher idle. changed all fluids changed spark plugs replaced air filter fuel filter ect.to no avail. i started to worry i got a lemon .well it got worse after mowing my yard for the first time started losing power turns out it threw a rod . 90.00 fix @ dealer to put it back in . got it home excited for it to purrr. nope still surging . at this point removed gas tank to clean it and fuel lines there were spiders dirt and sedament in tank. cleaned it thoroughly blew fuel lines clean changed fuel filter AGAIN!!and you guessed it still surging a bit . well long story and to wrap it up removed carb and with only 25 hrs on machine the carb had a 1/4 inch of black crud funk nasty garbage caked in bowl i never would have thunk that could happen in short amount of time but come to find out my tractor sat in storage almost 2 years without being started or having gas treatment amazing what time will do if you dont take precations. cleaned carb with cleaner and sanded bowl and wasnt happy with pits and condition of bowl so replaced it $8.00 fix .put everything back together and FINALLY!!!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!!! she purrs like a kitten. moral to story clean carb good and you will be great! if that doesnt get it i dont what else to check . I have since been told a little bit of dry gas mixed with your fuel will help general maintenance im not sure how i feel about that and have meant to call dealer and get their take on that but hopefully this will help you. I cant imagine its more than some gunk in your carb!! good luck let me know what happens

Surging IMO is usually a dirty or gummed up carb. or an outside chance adjusted too lean. I hardly ever replace spark plugs in lawn equipment, I just clean with carb. cleaner and wire brush check gap. then I check for spark before I reinstall them. I have never found one that looked good that wouldn't spark. Most people think a new plug will fix all when if fact it don't fix nothing 98.9999% of the time. It's just clean and of course new.

to add to my earlier post do not i repeat do not continue to run your machine with it surging you WILL throw a rod and it is not something you want to fix yourself and as i said about a $100.00 fix at dealer unless you are very machanichally inclined to do it yourself i do all my own sercice work but not when it comes to ripping engine itself apart
RE: Deere GT245 Engine Surges

As others have suggested, it's mostly like a carb problem
RE: Deere GT245 Engine Surges

Well, I tried the carb cleaner but no results. So, not knowing anything about carbs, I took it to the dealer, and they took it apart and cleaned it out (he said I was lucky I didn't have to buy a new carburetor, wheatever that means). Started it up at the dealer and it seemed to run ok, but a few days later when I mowed with it, there were still a couple of problems. Surging was gone, but the engine idles like crap (tends to die when I retard the throttle to idle) and it misses a little when under load. It just doesn't seem to be producing full power. Instead of taking it back to the dealer, is there anything else I could look for? Does anyone know where to get a service manual for this carb so I could take it apart myself? (that is the only way I would attempt it myself) Thanks to everyone who responded the first time.

FRESH fuel? Or the same old gas can?
RE: Deere GT245 Engine Surges
| | |
The fuel is probably 4 mo. old, and I had added Stabil to it. I've used older gas than this with absolutely no problems.
RE: Deere GT245 Engine Surges

Same OLD water in your 4 month old fuel?

I agree drain your fuel tank replace your fuel filter and blow out your gas lines if you dont your carb is going to be gunked up again! as far as a manual you can get a paper copy at the dealer for about 115.00 or a cd rom version for 60.00 that is a complete tech manual for everything i suggest it. if i can figure out how to post the carb page for the 245 off of my cdrom manual i will do so also check e bay for manual but most important give your machine a dose of good fresh fuel with a touch of dry gas added follow directions
RE: Deere GT245 Engine Surges

Well, I did everything that was suggested for the fuel system and filled the tank with absolutely fresh gasoline. Same problem as before, rough idle, intermittent missing at WOT, throttle really sensitive. I guess the dealer didn't do such a great job cleaning out the carb or something :-(

I had the same problem with my Toro. All I did was add Seafoam to gas.Took a couple of mowings but now is OK.Now I alternate between Seafoam and MMO added to all gas.
