14hp I/C quiet briggs motor stops runnung

I have a94 or 95 model wards signature 2000 rider with a 14hp briggs I/C quiet motor. The motor will start but dies after about 30 seconds or less.

I have checked the oil level, spark plug, fresh gas, and adjusted the valves. at first it became hard to start, i'd have to put gas down the carb to get it to fire, but it would still mow my entire lawn. now it will start, but will not run for more than 30 seconds. it acts like someone shut off the key.

what else should I check?

Check the breather hole in the gas cap. Right now is "bug time" and those little bugs are looking for any hole to lay an egg in. Which cloggs up the breather hole in the gas cap, and the result is a vacuum in the tank,and no gas comes out!

That symptom would be too quick for it to be a clogged cap vent.
The symptom does fit exactly with some things that can go wrong in a carb. Yes, we need the engine model and type numbers.

that engine is old enough to have complete fuel system failure, which IMO requires complete fuel system cleanup. I would start at the tank and work my way forward cleaning out the tank replacing fuel hoses and filter if it has one, then clean the carb.

I'd replace the fuel filter. it sounds like it allows enough fuel through to slowly fill the carb bowl after a few minutes, but not enough to keep running.
