how to remove the PTO and clutch

I have a Sears GT3000 that needs the governor replaced, and I can't figure out how to unbolt the PTO i.e. I don't know how to hold the crankshaft still so I can do it!

Any help would be appreciated.

You will most likely need an air impact wrench, and a socket to fit. Most mower owners don't usually have one of those, so you may have to take it somewhere to be repaired. There are-or used to be--electric impact wrenches, but i'm not sure if they are still made for sale.

An Electric impact wrench is a great low cost alternative to an air impact. Cheaper to buy (no compressor needed) and available at Sears or Harbor Freight.

You can often rent an electric impact at a tool rental place.

ALWAYS use an IMPACT RATED socket and safety glasses.

Remove spark plug, turn the engine until piston is coming up, feed a foot or so of nylon rope in thru spark plug hole. (Leave some out to retrieve by of course) IF this is an OHV engine, take care that piston is nearly up on compression stroke.

Use socket and breaker bar on bolt.

I'm do all of my own car and antique tractor repair, so I have the tools. :) I had hoped to find a better way than jamming a piston... I don't like foreign objects in there. Oh well!

I agree with you about 'foreign objects' in 'there'. I use a 3/8 'palm' impact wrench. Works great...

If you have the tools... there is no better way to remove the PTO bolt than an electric or air impact. If you don't own a compressor then an electric impact is the most cost effective tool you can buy or rent. If you have a compressor big enough to properly run an air impact then you're half way there... buy an air impact.

Once you own one you'll use it.

The better question for you to ask is how to tighten the PTO bolt to the correct torque cause snapping off that bolt in the crankshaft is a nightmare you don't want to experience.

torque value is no issue, I have the kohler service manual. I do my research first before trying an impact wrench that's all. Impact took it off with no trouble.

I was right, the governor was shattered. Unfortunately, it was shattered by one of the piston arms shattering, and taking out part of the lower wall of that cylinder. This has been one heck of a month let me tell you. Everything is breaking around here.
