18hp Briggs Opposed Twin Assembly Problem

I need some help from you experts out there!!

I have a circa 1992 Briggs 18hp Opposed twin. Disassembled motor to fix valve tappet problem and clean almost 20 years of carbon deposits, install new gaskets etc...
When the oil pan is off, and the crank, cam, pistons and valves are in, the crank turns just fine. When I put the oil pan on, even when it is backed off from the bottom of the block by 1/4", the crank will only turn 180 degrees. I cannot for the life of me see what is blocking the crank, or binding. I am sure it is a simple fix, but I am no expert and am completely stumped....

Thank you all very much for the help!!! Really want to get it up and running again, it has been a fantastic machine, dont want to waste it.

Are you talking a horizontal shaft engine? IF so, did you put the oil diper back in correctly?

Unfortunately no, it is a vertical shaft engine. The 'oil' pump plastic gear and the crank gear mesh well, so it's not either of those causing binding.
There is a notch on each piston the I have facing the the top of the engine, or the side with the flywheel, not the belt pulley. Since they turn freely before the oil pan is installed I couldn't imagine they are binding, but I might try spinning them around tonight...
