Carburetor Overhaul Question B&S 18 HP

Think my carb needs an overhaul. Engine has lots of hours on it (how many I'm not really sure but it's at least 15 years old). Started surging last fall.

Tried all the normal fixes (fresh fuel , filter , blowing some carb cleaner through it ) to no avail.

Question is should I attempt it myself or take it to a small engine repair shop.

The B&S manual shows schematics of a slew of carb's for the 18HP. How would I know which one I have on my engine? (model 422707)

I don't have a lot of the tools necessary for a carb overhaul. I did one many years ago on a 4bbl but had access to a shop , compressor , pail of carb cleaner and all kinds of tools such as feeler gauges etc.

Have no idea how complex these things are , how you'd adjust them (idle etc.) so thinking maybe a small engine shop would be best bet.

Or are they simple enough I could do it myself.

Input appreciated.
