Most likely, you have a problem with the hydro.

I am not trying to slam what you own but the L-series machines are noted for hydro issues that could have been prevented had Deere insisted on a hydro that could be serviced by the homeowner. An annual oil change is something that I think would extend the life of these hydro's several times over but I wonder if making them unserviceable is just part of the planned obsolescence for these tractors.

As I understand it, there is no drain plug on these hydro's and one can speculate as to the huge savings that was realized by not having this device. Others are welcome to chime in here that are more experienced on this product than I am. The way I see it, you don't have much to lose at this point.

If it was my tractor, I would remove the trans-axle and turn it upside down to allow the oil to drain out the fill plug that I believe is there. Once I was satisfied that it was empty, I'd refill it with fresh oil. I'm sure that someone will tell you which type of oil to use.

Yes.. I think that you have a low oil issue and along with an oil that is essentially worn out from a viscosity standpoint. Overall, the L-Series are not all that bad a unit but no one should have to replace a hydro/trans-axle after a mere six years of use. That's disgusting. If this procedure works out for you, then I suggest that you repeat it very second year from this point on to extend the life of your tractor to a more reasonable figure.
