Starter Solenoid - Generic?

I was wondering if any solenoid will do since they all take 12 volts from the switch and they all send power from the battery to the starter throught their posts. I also know they all are grounded either throught their base or a seperate terminal.

So can I just pick one up off the shelf?

Better make sure the connections are good at both ends and the battery fully charged or you got deep pockets picking parts out to replace.

Some things to check. Be sure that the battery, if new, is the correct cranking amperage. Be sure the battery leads are not corroded (look for build up on terminals and the wires). Apply a good battery source directly to the solenoid. If the solenoid just clicks, then bypass it and apply battery directly to starter terminal. If it cranks, replace solenoid.
