cub cadet bad engine

I got a cub cadet AGS 2160 from my nephew to

see why it did not start and run. His 11 year

old son was home alone mowing when it stopped.

what I found it needs , 2 rods and pistons , cam ,

side plate and I do not know if the crank will clean

up and there is a piece missing from the bottom

of one cyl.It had been running on one cyl for a while

and it looks like that is the rod that seized on

the crank and then took out the other rod.

The deck is good but even for a 01 it has not

been taken care of . So in fair shape any idea

what this should be worth for parts. Would he

do better parting it out or sell the way it is ??

your engine should be horz. briggs vanguard. These engines are very expensive. I would look for used like engine 16 to 20 hp horz. vanguard there thousands of them out there on welders, mowers, generators, but finding one cheap (less than 500 bucks) would be the challange.

That engine 1200 plus new and trying to piece togather the old one in hopes it might work may cost more than it worth. If it had been caught early and not ran with one connecting rod seperated maybe it would be cost effective to fix. But, I dought it is now with loose parts clanking around creating havoc.

Horizontal shaft of what I think you have is hard to find. It would have been nice to have the engine model number so we would know for sure what we are talking about. I sell rebuilt ones for around $350 WHEN I can find them.

NOTE that IF it is a 40, 42 or 46 series flat head, "L" head, most vertical shaft engine parts will interchange including the crankshaft, camshaft, rods, pistons, valves. Ball Bearing of horizontal shaft engine will slip onto the crankshaft of the vertical shaft. A SMALL pc. missing from bottom of cylinder will not hurt. I can tell you how to use the vertical shaft engine block for the horizontal shaft engine. Vertical shaft engines are much, much, more common.

It is a horizontal shaft 16 HP briggs OHV engine.
    Model 303447
    Type 0447-01 4952
    Code 94120711

I have a 18 HP horizontal OHV Vanguard engine but
I have plans for it , took him less than 2 years
to destroy a good lawn tractor. I will do the work
on the tractor for free if he want to fix it but
the last I talked to him he is going to buy a Troy
Built from Lowes that will be a throw away in 3
to 4 years. I offered to service the cub last fall
and again this spring , even offered to pick it
up and deliver it . I knew the the rods were gone
when I pulled the plugs and neither piston moved
but I have never seen a cam break in 3 places .

I would like know how to use a vertical shaft engine
block for a horizontal shaft engine. I think that
I know where I can buy a 21 HP vertical engine for
$250 would have to see if it is any good.

The block might be useable if it was just chunk
missing form the one Cyl but when the cam end broke
off in the block it did more damage .When you add
up the cost of 2 rods and pistons , rings , cam ,
side plate and a gasket kit this engine is not
worth fixing . If I do put another engine in it
I would have to sell it get get my $$ back .Right
now I do not have time to do anymore work on it
and it will have to be a winter project or just
put it on the trailer and return it .

    Roy Thanks for the help
