craftsman 30" mid engine riding mower

I bought this riding mower in 2005 and its treated me well over the years. I've been somewhat proactive with Routine maintenance with oil changes, air filter and keeping the blade sharp.

This year however the riding mower doesn't seem to engage into drive and reverse like it should. Almost like it slips.

Now I'm sure it's one of two things, either I need to replace the belts or the hydrostatic transmission is dying on me.

I've never changed the belts and looking at the book really doesn't help much.

Anyone have any experience with doing this job? Are there things I should have, besides the belts, prior to starting this? Tools?

Thanks for any help.
