Craftsman lawn tractor won't go forward

My five year old tractor will not go forward. It's a Craftsman 21.5 HP, 42" Mower with Automatic Transmission, model No. 917.272464. I've used it for mowing and snowblowing. Reverse works just fine, but no forward motion at all. I tried purging the transmission and adjusting the transaxle motion control lever with no change as a result. I checked both the parking brake and freewheel transmission disengagement levers, they appear to work correctly but neither are the problem. Recently laid off, I can't afford a new tractor and mowing season is here, my three acres keep growing. Help.

Why don't you describe what the tractor does (engine races, bogs down, etc.,) when you attempt to go forward.

Engine neither races nor bogs down, no change in engine at all, it's just that there is no forward motion, as if I hadn't engaged the transmission at all.

In the owner's manual for this tractor are several items that could be used to check out your transmission function (air purging procedure) and the fender control linkage adjustment.

Suggest going thru them in detail. If still no luck, then time to call Sears repair or such.
If you need it, a manual can be downloaded from sears parts. Just put in your model number and follow the web page instructions on the r/h side.

It sounds to be inside. They are really a pita to do anything with IMO. You will want to verify part #, but I tossed the the #s on Google. There is one currently on EBAY for $240. Normally closer to $500

Here is a link that might be useful: Ebay
