yard machine cranks strong but wont fire

i was mowing the grass, i shut off the mower to run inside for a minute. when i came back out the mower would not start. it cranks strong but wont fire. it's happend before but i just let it sit for a little while and it started. this time it wont start. i laid the plug against the cylinder and it's getting weak intermittent to non existent spark. does that automatically mean it's a bad magneto or is there other posible causes for lack of spark. for the record it's a 14.5 briggs and straton and both spark plugs are brand new.

"it's a 14.5 briggs and straton and both spark plugs are brand new."

This does not identify the engine. The model number will.

not sure which is the model number but there are three sets of numbers on it, 42a707, type:2238e1, code 9904105a

If you allow your machine to set outside, in the weather, including rain and snow, they have a tendency to rust up in all of the important places, which causes the engine and ignition to get mixed up, and results in a no-start condition. Best to check that stuff first. RJ

42a707, type:2238e1 are the important numbers-
Model 42A707
Type 2238-E1
Code is date code/assembly line.
YYMMDDzz Your engine was built April 10, 1999.

It's probably the coil, but-
There's something in the back of my mind about a connecting wire with a? diode(s) in it.
Not sure if that applies to your engine.
Hopefully, Walt will be along shortly. He's the "man" when it comes to these engines.

You can remove the shroud etc., since that will have to be done anyway.

DO examine the kill wire for chafing. If it's intermittently shorting, it could cause the same problems.
The kill wire is grounded to kill spark.

i've had the machine for about 8 months. since i've owned it it's been under a shed roof out of the rain. i'm almost certain the previous owner did the same. Thanks for the information on the date of manufacture. that will help when i decide what part i need.
