It might not be related to getting hot, it could be a clogged fuel tank filler cap vent. If the vent in the filler cap clogs, it will not allow air to come in as the fuel depletes. This will lead to a point where the engine can no longer draw fuel out of the tank.
Check the cap vent and probe the hole with a piece of paper clip wire.
But, if the condition really is caused by OVERHEATING, you had better remove the sheet metal shrouding from the engine and look for mouse nests or their food caches.
