5/16" is what it was. 1/2" would have split the connector or the switch resulting in a much faster diagnosis. :)

Just think what a dishonest repair shop would charge!

I'm an industrial electrician. I run in to this kind of stuff often, but with a little more voltage.....

Last week I had a work order that the breaker on some lights was tripping and wouldn't reset. After a lot of searching I narrowed it down to a section of wire in the wall. I noticed a new folder "thingy" on that wall and I asked when it was installed. The guy said that the lights went out when he was installing it. I asked him why he didn't tell me that to start with! He said I dunno.... GGGGRRRRRRR!!!!!!

I have had roof repairers and other people run screws in to 277V and above wires. That was easier to find! LOL

After many years of reading these columns, i have decided that some folks are dumber than a hoe handle, and should never be let loose with anything heavier than a red brick and a stick!
My main trade was auto body work, back in my younger days. I'd write an estimate, and 5 out of 10 would bring their car in and tell me they had "roughed it out", and that way, it would save them some cash, because of their work! DUM DE DUM, DUM! Invariably, it would make the job cost more. They would use the brick/stick method.
Yes, folks, don't spend the cash to buy the correct mounting brackets, just drill, hammer, pound, and kick away, and eventually you will have cobbled up something that might work--might not, too!
